70s versus 80s

The exhibition and publication 70s versus 80s set out in search of the singular aesthetic of those decades. Radical furniture design is presented by figures such as Luigi Colani, Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini, along with glass, ceramic and textile objects displaying forms characteristic for the era. A highlight is the reconstruction of a glass installation set up in the early 70s at Museum Bellerive by the American artists Dale Chihuly and James Carpenter, which was afterward tucked away behind a wall and hidden from view for many years. This original 70s installation is juxtaposed with a room-filling work the Swiss artists Lang/Baumann created especially for the exhibition. Although thoroughly a product of its time, the new work’s design language still draws on the 70s aesthetic.
