Steve McCurry. Walking on High Ground. Bangladesh

The American photographer Steve McCurry (b. 1950) first gained worldwide fame in 1979 when, disguised as a member of the mujahideen, he took the first pictures inside Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and smuggled them out of the country. In 1985 he then made his iconic photograph of the Afghan girl Sharbat Gula at a refugee camp. McCurry has in the meantime maintained close ties with Asia. He documents disappearing cultures and traditions, the consequences of globalization, and the changes in people’s life circumstances. Walking on High Ground is part of a picture cycle spanning several years that shows how the monsoon affects everyday life.
